"Between Moscow and Beijing"

Kyrgyzstan is a scenically stunning and politically stable travel gem in Central Asia, still largely untouched by mass tourism. Caught between Russian influence and Chinese presence, the country preserves a strong and vibrant tradition.

During my journey through Kyrgyzstan in the spring of 2016, I encountered people in vast, often harsh landscapes whose daily lives are shaped by simplicity: many live in yurts, maintain customs, and wear traditional clothing. Theirfaces reflect modesty and quiet joy, but also the visible traces of poverty and patriarchal structures.

At the same time, a subtle change can be felt. Construction sites and infrastructure projects are emerging along the roads, often with Chinese support, to modernize the dilapidated transport routes.

My black-and-white photographs capture these facets: the beauty of nature, the dignity of the people, the strength of community, and the gentle change. They are snapshots, subjective and personal, yet perhaps it is precisely for this reason that they reveal something about the quiet resilience of this country between Moscow and Beijing.
