Kaspar Thalmann “Habitats in the Alps”
In order to cultivate the slopes in Ticino, areas on the wooded flanks are cleared and aisles are cut. The interventions to secure the habitat are particularly visible in winter and even more so when there is little snow cover. The village of St. Antönien
in the canton of Graubünden was affected by devastating avalanches for centuries. From 1953 to 1977, one of the largest avalanche protection structures in Switzerland was built above the village after the extensive destruction of the Bannwald
forest. The 16 kilometers of structures protect around 90 buildings and about 70 inhabitants. Since then, maintenance has been a never-ending task.
